Minister Heather Humphreys has made the move, following a spike in attacks including the death of Nicole Morey in Limerick.
From October 1st, the breeding, sale, rehoming and importing of XL bully dogs will be completely banned.
Anyone who currently owns one of the dogs won't have to destroy it, but by February 1st all XL bullies would have to be neutered and microchipped.
However, a number of animal welfare charities have expressed concerns about the bans.
An additional €2 million in funding is being provided to local authorities, to expand and improve their pound and warden facilities.
