A camera trap is a camera that uses a motion sensor to automatically capture photographs of anything that passes by, and is often used to document wildlife in their natural habitat.
ReWild Wicklow have published a report on their own camera trap initiative across east Wicklow in 2023, where they used camera traps across 47 sites to collect 183,297 photographs and captured 11 wild mammal species and a variety of birds.
ReWild’s camera trap initiative is the largest in Ireland, with their end goal being the collection of systematic wildlife camera trap data on mammals across many study sites. This initiative is part of a wider project titled ‘Snapshot Europe’, where camera traps are used all over Europe to capture as much wildlife data as possible during September and October each year.
