A man in his 40s remains in custody this morning in connection with the murder of a young teacher in Co. Offaly.
The 22-year-old, named locally as Ashling Murphy, was attacked in Tullamore yesterday afternoon.
An area along the Grand Canal remained sealed off in the town overnight following the attack on the 22-year-old school teacher.
Its believed the woman, Ashling Murphy, was exercising along the canal between Boland's Lock and Digby Bridge when she was attacked.
A man in his 40s has been arrested, and remains in custody at Tullamore Garda station this morning.
Gardaí believe it was a random attack and do not believe the victim and the man in custody knew each other.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them.
