Plans have been unveiled to increase offshore wind energy targets in the programme for government from 3.5 to 5 Gigawatt , enough energy to power around 5 million homes.
The programme is to be phased in by 2030, with the first auction of quota to potential developers by next year.
Last week SSE Renewables announced plans to invest up to €2 billion on Phase 2 of the existing Arklow Bank windfarm off the south Wicklow coast, which it said could be delivered by 2025 According to the Irish Times, the expansion plans for the Arklow Bank will see up to 100 additional turbines on the site.
