Wicklow Wexford Fine Gael TD steps in help dislodge a knife from the possession of a man who appeared distressed on Kildare street in Dublin this week
A Fine Gael TD has spoken of the moment he helped gardaí to disarm a man who was attempting to harm himself with a knife outside the Dáil on Wednesday evening.
Wicklow Wexford TD Brian Brennan was returning to Leinster House after a meeting with the IFA at the Mansion House when he came across the man near Buswells Hotel.
Speaking to East Coast FM News, Deputy Brennan described the scene:
"As I was walking close to Buswells Hotel, I came across a man in a very, very agitated state. He was also holding a knife."
Two gardaí were already at the scene, along with disability rights activist Mark Darmody, who's been staging a protest outside Leinster House along with his daughter Cara.
Together, they managed to get the knife away from the man.

"We were lucky enough to dislodge the knife, and the main concern was to try and calm the man down until the emergency services arrived," Brennan said.
The TD said his thoughts remain with the man, adding that he has since confirmed he is receiving the support he needs.
Brennan thanked those involved in the response. "I'd like to say well done and thanks to our emergency services, including the gardaí and the ambulance, and also to Mark Darmody."
