The death has been confirmed of a Bray resident who was fatally injured while running in Spain last week.
Austrian-born Thomas Bubendorfer, 52, was well-known in Irish running circles and for his blog Diary of a Rubbish Marathon Runner. His award-winning blog chronicled his journey toward completing a sub-three-hour marathon and detailed how he discovered a love and skill for running ultra distances.
Mr Bubendorfer worked as a computer programmer and had competed in many marathons and ultras, for example the IAU 24-hour world championships in 2017 and 2015. He also completed the 246K Spartathlon in 2015. The family previously lived in Kerry.
The father-of-four lived in Bray with his wife Niamh Swan and their children. Ms Swan confirmed his death in a social media post:
"It is with such a heavy heart that I write this. Thomas my beloved husband was killed on Tuesday last in Madrid when out for a run. We are absolutely devastated and utterly bereft without him.
We were married 25 years with 4 children and still so much in love. There are no words."
