Irish Rail has appointed consultants ARUP to oversee the extension of the electrified DART line from Malahide in North Dublin to Drogheda in County Louth.
The DART Plus programme will also see improvements made to the existing line that runs to Greystones in South Wicklow, with passenger capacity expected to increase by up to 50% by 2028.
Level crossings between the City Centre and Merrion Gates are due to be removed, while a plan will be developed to facilitate continued access for cars, pedestrians and cyclists to areas adjacent to the existing DART line.
Permission for works will be subject to a Railway Order being approved, which will include an extensive public consultation process with communities and individuals along the route.
