Under the plans, Afghans who are already living here can bring their close family members to reside with them.
They will be allowed to live and work here for two years, when they will then have to apply to stay for longer if they want to.
One possible stumbling block is that the Afghans will have to find their own way to Ireland which could prove tricky given the current Taliban regime.
The Government says they will work with NGOS to help get them out.
