Funding has been secured from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to carry out a Transportation Study in Arklow.
The study will examine ways to help address traffic congestion in the town.
The council is being urged to prioritise the construction of a slip road on and off the M11 to the Vale Road and the development of a new port access road, which would remove a large number of heavy goods vehicles from the town centre.
Currently those travelling to Woodenbridge or Aughrim have to come through Arklow which adds to the congestion.
Welcoming the funding, Wicklow T.D. John Brady says traffic in the town is still a major problem and it needs to be addressed to ensure that the town’s potential can be fully unlocked.
