Knockananna GAA has been approved for funding of €50,000 toward the cost of making the car park and walkway around the sports pitches more accessible to the community. The funding is part of a €5m support package for over 100 sports clubs in rural communities countrywide announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD.

The funding is being provided as part of Our Rural Future, the Government’s strategic five-year rural development plan, under 2023 CLÁR (Ceantair Laga Árd-Riachtanais) programme. The CLÁR programme provides funding for small scale projects in rural areas that have experienced significant levels of population decline.Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy, congratulated Knockananna GAA stating: “I am delighted that the club is being supported in this way and I am sure that the funding will go a long way towards enhancing the amenities at Knockananna GAA for the whole community.”

Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council, also offered her congratulations, saying:

”Our sports clubs, schools and community groups are the lifeblood of rural Ireland. They are a focal point – places where people of all ages come together to socialise and meet up with friends. These projects are hugely important to our local communities. It is important that we continue to invest in rural communities is County Wicklow in as many ways as possible, and the CLÁR program is a fantastic way that we can continue to do this.”Michael Nicholson, Director of Service, Wicklow County Council, added: “The CLÁR Programme has been very beneficial to eligible rural communities in County Wicklow, and it demonstrates that investment in these communities can make a big difference to the people who live there. This project, in particular, will improve accessibility for all members of the community in Knockananna and make sporting events more inclusive all, particularly for older people and spectators with mobility difficulties. “
