Never try to stand up in moving water; even shallow, fast-moving water can knock a person off their feet.
Water Safety Ireland is urging extra caution as heavy rainfall is expected to cause significant flooding.
It’s warning floodwater can be fast-moving and hide open drains, debris, or dangerous currents.
The body advises staying well back from rivers, streams and coastal edges, during and after heavy rain, as banks can collapse without warning.
Drivers are also reminded not to drive through flooded roads, particularly near rivers, bridges, underpasses, or low-lying areas. The depth of water and the extent of road damage are often impossible to judge, especially in poor light. Fast-moving water can lift and carry away a vehicle in seconds.
Flooding can develop quickly, creating dangerous conditions on roads, in homes, and near waterways. Members of the public are encouraged to check on older neighbours or those with mobility issues to ensure they are informed, prepared, and safe.
In Case of Emergency Water Safety Ireland advises:
- Do not enter floodwater to attempt a rescue.
- Use public ringbuoys or other reaching aids where possible.
- Call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
