Wicklow claimed the Kehoe Cup for first time since 2003 with a one-point win over Meath
WICKLOW’S hurling heroes clinched the Kehoe Cup for the first time since 2003, thanks to some clutch performances from Bosco O'Neill's indomitable Garden county panel in the soft going yesterday in County Meath by 0-16 to 3-06.
From the first whistle in Dunganny, Wicklow’s men set the tone. Top scorer Pádraig Doran wasted no time, racing through the opening moments to register the first two points signaling the intent of a crew determined to end a two-decade wait.
Fionn Darcy showcased why he is one of Wicklow’s most dangerous forwards, expertly slotting over three points from play before halftime. By the break, Wicklow led comfortably 0-12 to 2-4, with their relentless work rate widelt noted.
The second half tested the mettle of Wicklow warriors. Scores were hard-earned, but Doran kept his nerve several times which proved decisive.
His three second-half frees steadied the ship after a Royals comeback while Willie Cash snaffled a crucial point to split the posts in the second period.
Meath had Tom Shine and Mark Leavy closing the gap to a single point, and a late goal from Jack Walsh putting Wicklow’s defenders to the ultimate test.
Yet the backbone of the team – John Henderson and Bryan Kearney – stood firm, repelling wave after wave to secure a hard-fought victory.
This win was a testament to the unyielding spirit of Wicklow’s men. From Doran’s calm finishing to Darcy’s attacking flair and the defensive heroics of Henderson and Kearney.
Wicklow’s triumph may have been by the slimmest of margins, but the legacy of these players will echo for years to come. The Kehoe Cup is back in the hands of the county’s finest.
Next up the garden county men face off against Roscommon in the Allianz hurling league.
