Concerns have been expressed after Irish Rail said it would no longer keep a marshland area south of Kilcoole train station clear from blocking up.
Wicklow Councillor Tom Fortune says ensuring there is clear drainage of the area known as the Breaches, prevents flooding which affects residential properties in both Kilcoole and Newcastle. Management at Newcastle airfield had carried out the work for several years, but was told by Irish rail to stop and that they would do the clearance work. However councillor Fortune says the equipment that Irish Rail use was damaged recently, but the company is refusing to allow anyone else carry out the work. He says the council needs to intervene and bring about a resolution to the problem.
