Contrasting Patterns In Wicklow Crime Figures & Statistics Year-On-Year

Newly released Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures for the Wicklow Garda Division show a mixed crime landscape for the third quarter of 2025. The data highlights ongoing challenges for Gardaí in both urban and rural areas of Wicklow, with community vigilance and targeted enforcement remaining essential.

Newly released figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show a mixed picture for crime in Wicklow for the third quarter of 2025, with some offences falling sharply while others continue to rise.

Road and traffic offences recorded the most significant drop, falling 30% from 263 incidents in Q3 2024 to 184 this year. Controlled drug offences also decreased by 28%, down from 69 incidents to 50.

While these reductions are welcome, they reflect a narrower slice of Garda activity,” said a spokesperson for the Wicklow Garda Division. “We continue to focus on both enforcement and community engagement to maintain these trends.”

In contrast, property-related crime saw an increase. Damage to property and environmental offences rose by 21%, from 110 incidents in Q3 2024 to 133, while burglaries increased slightly from 77 to 86 incidents. Theft overall decreased marginally, from 483 incidents to 465, suggesting that while some property offences are falling, others remain a persistent challenge.

Public order and social code offences fell from 138 to 120 incidents, while low-volume crimes such as robbery, extortion, and hijacking also decreased, from 10 to seven incidents. Weapons and explosives offences dropped significantly, from 11 to four.

Violent offences, including assaults, threats, and harassment, increased slightly, from 117 to 125 incidents. Sexual offences remained broadly stable, rising only from 17 to 18 incidents.

Comparing these figures to previous years, the decline in road and drug offences continues a trend seen since late 2023, while the rise in property-related crime echoes patterns observed in rural areas across the county.

Certain areas of Wicklow, particularly smaller towns and isolated communities, remain vulnerable to property offences,” the Garda spokesperson added. “These figures reinforce the need for ongoing vigilance and local reporting.”

The mixed results underline the complex nature of crime across Wicklow. While some categories show improvement, the Gardaí note that targeted enforcement and community engagement remain crucial, especially in areas where isolation or limited services can contribute to both crime and underreporting.
