In 2023 Wicklow County Council voted to support the LGBTQIA+ Community by agreeing to create Permanent Pride Rainbow Crossings in each of its Municipal Districts.
The proposal came from Arklow based filmmaker and activist Dave Thomas who was behind the first ever permanent Pride rainbow Crossing in Arklow which was created in 2021.
The proposal was supported by Greystones Councillor Lourda Scott who tabled the Motion for the initiative, which was seconded by Cllr. Paul O’Brien.
Council officials are now citing the absence of national legislation regarding the installation of further rainbow crossings in municipal districts across the county.
In a letter to Cllr Paul O'Brien, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Mr Thomas has requested the following clarifications:
-
Has the Department of Transport explicitly instructed Wicklow County Council not to proceed with the Pride Rainbow Crossings?
-
Has Wicklow County Council contacted the Department of Transport for clarification on this matter?
As of yet, he has received no response.
