Local residents in Greystones have expressed concern after a gate appeared on the North Pier in the Marina yesterday afternoon.
It's understood contractor Sispar took the measure without any prior consultation with the community.
Following correspondence with Councillor Lourda Scott, council officials say it will only be used during significant weather events when over topping occurs along the breakwater.
The pier was temporarily closed off for a few hours in order to facilitate the installation.
Councillor Scott says the issue could have easily been avoided.
