“I hope Wicklow County Council takes the opportunity to act immediately on receiving this motion. It doesn’t need a mandate from Councillors to protect women and children." Green Party Councillor Lourda Scott.
A Wicklow councillor is urging Wicklow County Council to immediately stop using X.
Green Party spokesperson for children Lourda Scott tabled the motion arguing the social media platform and its AI tools now pose unacceptable risks to the safety of women and children.
It is co-signed by women councillors from across party groupings.
Councillor Scott says the platform has changed significantly in recent years and is no longer appropriate for use by a public body.
She pointed to reports to the Oireachtas Media Committee that An Garda Síochána is investigating around 200 cases involving alleged child sexual abuse material on X.
Councillor Scott has confirmed she stopped using X in February 2025 and is now deleting her account. She added Dublin City Council has already ended its use of the platform.
The motion will be considered by Wicklow County Council.
