A Wicklow nun is one of 10 women who have been presented with an International Women of Courage Award. The award, now in its 13th year, recognises women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership.
Sister Orla Treacy from Bray, travelled to Sudan in 2006 with four other Loretto nuns, to set up a new mission in the country. Today, she serves as the head administrator of the Loreto Rumbek Mission , where she oversees a boarding secondary school for girls, a co-educational primary school, and a women and child primary healthcare facility
Sister Orla was nominated for the prize by the US embassy to the Holy See. Yesterday she was was presented with an award for her work by US secretary of state and the US first lady.
