The singer was shot dead outside his apartment building in New York by a deranged fan.
At around 5 o'clock in the evening of the 8th of December in 1980, the former member of the Beatles autographed a copy of his album Double Fantasy for fan Mark David Chapman before leaving his home at the Dakota Apartment building in Manhattan. Along with his wife Yoko Ono, Lennon returned to their apartment at around ten to eleven that night. As they walked through the archway of the building, Chapman shot Lennon twice in the back and twice in the shoulder.
His killer has been denied parole 11 times, with a 12th hearing scheduled for 2022.
