Wicklow's Hurling And Camogie Stars Earn International Rules Call-Ups

The Irish camogie and hurling squads for the International Rules Series in Inverness have been confirmed

Wicklow’s hurling and camogie stars take their place on the national stage in the annual Ireland versus Scotland shinty internationals.

In the hurling panel, Andrew Kavanagh flies the flag for Wicklow — the Glenealy forward earning his call-up alongside some of the sport’s biggest names.

Surrounded by All-Ireland winners like Dan Morrissey of Limerick and Eoin Murphy of Kilkenny, Kavanagh’s inclusion is a real statement of the progress Wicklow hurling has been making in recent seasons.

He’s known for his sharp striking and clever movement — qualities that should suit the hybrid code of shinty-hurling perfectly.

On the camogie side, there’s even more Wicklow colour — Sive Byrne and Casey Kelly both make the Irish panel.

It’s a remarkable achievement for the county, reflecting the quiet rise of Wicklow camogie at intercounty level.

Byrne’s tenacity in defence and Kelly’s energy around the middle third will bring real balance to a team captained by Cork’s Saoirse McCarthy.

For Wicklow supporters, it’s a weekend to watch with pride — three Garden County players representing Ireland on the international stage, shoulder to shoulder with some of the biggest names in the game.

Ireland face Scotland this weekend — and for Wicklow’s Kavanagh, Byrne, and Kelly, it’s a golden chance to show that the blue and gold of Wicklow belongs on the green of Ireland.

Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns said: “Well done to all of the players who have made the travelling panels and who will represent their codes, their clubs, counties and of course Ireland in the 2025 series on Saturday.

“After resurrecting the cross-code game with matches in Newry and Ennis in the last two years, it is fitting that our hurlers should travel to Bught Park in Inverness and I wish everyone well as relations and friendships between our organisations are rekindled.”

Uachtarán an Chumainn Camógaíochta, Brian Molloy said: “I would like to congratulate all of the players selected to represent Ireland in this year’s Camogie–Shinty International Rules Series. It is a wonderful honour to wear the green jersey and to showcase their talent on the international stage.

"This double-header with the hurling–shinty match is another important step forward for equality in Gaelic games, ensuring our Camogie players share the same stage and spotlight as their hurling counterparts. I would like to thank the Camanachd Association for their continued partnership and the Europlan Group for their valued support of the Irish Camogie team.”
