The growing impact of Artificial Intelligence is in the spotlight.
A local TD has been sharing his expertise on AI Policy with EU Ambassadors.
Malcolm Byrne was the guest speaker at a recent meeting of all European Union member state ambassadors to Ireland. The event took place at the Embassy of Slovakia in Dublin.
The Wicklow-Wexford TD is the Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence. Deputy Byrne spoke on the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence on all aspects of society as well as EU moves to ensure citizen safety in its rollout and use.
Deputy Byrne pointed out,
“Artificial Intelligence is having a transformative impact in areas as diverse as agriculture, transport, healthcare. It is critical that as legislators and policymakers that we are really engaged in the topic and that while we want to support innovation and enterprise, we have to make sure that there are safety guardrails in place.”
Artificial Intelligence will be a theme of Ireland’s presidency of the European Union during the second half of 2026. Deputy Byrne added,
“The European Union is taking a global lead on this through the Artificial Intelligence Act, looking to regulate where and when AI can and cannot be used. It is of huge interest to every European Union country and so I was honoured to be invited to speak to all the ambassadors at this event.”
Deputy Byrne added,
“I am also meeting so many individuals and organisations and businesses across Counties Wicklow and Wexford who are now using AI to make some of what they do more efficient. People are really beginning to engage in the possibilities of this new technology.”
