Mason Melia earns his Spurs after he scored his first European goal to underline why Tottenham splashed the cash on the Bray favourite in St Pats win
Tottenham Hotspur bound, Wicklow Wonder Mason Melia was pivotal as St Patrick’s Athletic swept past FC Hegelmann in Lithuania to win 2-0 in the Uefa Conference League last night, advancing 3-0 on aggregate.
The teenage striker scored an early goal while setting up a second for Stephen Kenny’s Saints.
The Inchicore based outfit were too strong all round as Melia and his fellow academy graduate Kian Leavy struck in the Lithuanian heat yesterday.
The 17-year-old former Bray Wanderers scored early himself, while creating the second with a mazy run before assisting Leavy who planted a top corner finish in 56th minute.
Melia also had a strong penalty shout waved away after dancing past two players before Vilius Armalas' crunching tackle.
Melia – who moves to London in January – scored his first European goal after five minutes to underline why Tottenham forked out nearly two million pounds for his services.
St Pats will face Estonian side Kalju in the second round after they beat Albania’s Partizani after extra-time. The first leg will take place at Richmond Park next Thursday.
