Wicklow TD Champions ‘Shop Local’ Push For A Festive Boost

“Shop Local in Wicklow this Christmas,” urges Fine Gael Deputy Edward Timmins

Wicklow shoppers are being encouraged to support local businesses this festive season

Fine Gael Deputy Edward Timmins is highlighting the significant benefits to the community and local economy.

With economic uncertainties shaping consumer habits, supporting local businesses is more important than ever.

KPMG reports that Irish consumers are preparing for a more challenging Christmas this year, making every local purchase count.

I’m encouraging people to support the small businesses in our towns and villages across Wicklow this Christmas. According to research carried out by ISME, €10 spent locally on Irish products generates more than €40 of benefit to the local community in terms of employment. Independent local retailers, eateries, and other businesses have a crucial role to play in our local economy.”

A Community-Centred Approach

Deputy Timmins highlighted the social value of local businesses:

“Local shops and eateries serve as community hubs where people can connect, enjoy personalised service, and access higher-quality products. These businesses foster strong relationships with customers, making transactions smoother and more meaningful.”

Research also shows that younger shoppers are increasingly using technology to aid their festive purchases. According to EY Ireland, one-in-three 18 to 34-year-olds are using AI tools to help with Christmas shopping.

Deputy Timmins stressed the importance of reminding young people of the benefits of supporting local businesses, many of which provide part-time employment opportunities for the community.

Encouraging Festive Support

The EY Ireland Consumer Pulse 2025 study shows that 71% of people plan to complete most of their festive shopping in-store.

Deputy Timmins encourages locals to amplify their support by sharing posts from boutiques, butchers, and other small businesses across social media using the hashtags **#ShopWicklow** and **#SupportLocal**.

“As an experienced businessperson, I’m aware of the crucial role that SMEs play in our local economy. As a TD, I will be using all of my platforms to promote local business over the coming weeks. Research carried out on behalf of the Local Enterprise Offices as part of a ‘Look for Local’ campaign demonstrated that 82% of Irish consumers were more likely to buy local, either online or in-store, as a result of campaigns to promote local businesses.”

This Christmas, Think Local

Deputy Timmins concluded with a festive reminder: “This Christmas, let’s ‘support local’ in Wicklow.”

By choosing local shops and services, shoppers not only gain unique products and personalised experiences, but they also contribute directly to the economic and social fabric of their communities.
