Judge John Martin has described the offense as “appalling and atrocious” for someone who had been a perfectly normal functioning member of society before the attack
A Bray man has been jailed for two years for beating up a delivery driver and stealing his mobile phone from outside his home during a violent attack.
37-year-old plumber Leon Cooney, of Ardmore Drive on Herbert Road pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to the driver on January 15th, 2024.
The court was told that the defendant was highly intoxicated and physically attacked the driver who suffered abrasions to his head, hands, knees and lower back.
The presiding judge said mitigating factors were Cooney’s early guilty plea, his genuine remorse and an offer of €2,500 which he had brought to court which had been accepted by the delivery driver.
Cooney was sentenced to three years with the final 12 months suspended, provided he keeps the peace for two years and completes an anger management course.
