As part of its Age Friendly Library Strategy, Wicklow County Council Library Service has news for older people who may be considering the purchase of an electronic tablet.The library, with support from Dormant Account Funding along with financial support from Age Friendly Wicklow, has purchased ACORN smart tablets, uniquely tailored for older residents in Wicklow.
These tablets will be available on a three-week loan basis, offering older people a 'taster' experience allowing them to familiarise themselves with the technology before deciding to purchase.ACORN tablets come with an easy-to-use interface, curated content for senior interests, and built-in safety features. The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, foster community connection, and promote lifelong learning among our older communities.
The Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy, said: “This is more than just introducing a piece of technology; it's about weaving the essence of connectivity, knowledge, and accessibility into the fabric of our senior community's everyday life. As a Council, we are making strides in ensuring that every resident of Wicklow feels heard, valued, and empowered in this digital age."

By offering ACORN tablets on a loan basis, we are not just promoting digital inclusivity but also offering our older residents a chance to experience the benefits of modern technology before committing to it."Wicklow County Council’s age friendly Strategy 2023-2027 clearly identifies the need for older members of the community to be encouraged and supported to engage with digital devices. Including state-of-the-art technology like the ACORN tablets within our services embodies this commitment.
