Can Wicklow take a major step towards promotion with table topping Donegal now in their sights after a big win against Fermanagh
Wicklow produced a commanding display in Aughrim on Sunday, to send Fermanagh packing with a 5-14 to 0-7 win in a performance that sets the Garden County up perfectly ahead of next Sunday’s trip to Letterkenny.
Even after losing two key players to red cards — Brandon Ryan just before half-time and Emmet Blanchfield late in the game—Wicklow maintained control.
Bosco O'Neill's boys outscored Fermanagh by 1-2 to nil, even after Blanchfield’s dismissal, in a show of resilience.
The contest had proved nip and tuck initially before two quick goals from Pádraig Doyle put the hosts firmly in charge.
Fermanagh were limited to just three points from open play over the course of a frustrating 70 minutes.
Wicklow kept up their strong momentum as Seanie Germaine and Eoin McCormack added further goals, while Bray Emmetts star man Doyle completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, finishing with 3-8.
A star turn from Wicklow's player of the year.
Next Sunday, Wicklow face division three table toppers Donegal at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny.
With their opening-round defeat to Roscommon behind them, the Garden County face a must-win situation to keep their promotion hopes alive — and Sunday’s performance suggests they’re ready for the challenge.
Manager Bosco O'Neill spoke to Wicklow GAA TV's Daniel Kennedy on their latest win in their division 3 encounter:
