The best of Bray, Katie Taylor Prepares For Historic Farewell in Dublin
The boxing world is bracing itself for the end of an era.
Katie Taylor, Ireland’s undisputed superstar, has revealed plans to retire from professional boxing after one final, momentous fight in Dublin this summer.
Taylor’s career has spanned two decades, defined by explosive victories, unparalleled skill, and an indomitable spirit.
Taylor, 39, last defended her undisputed super lightweight world title against Amanda Serrano in a thrilling trilogy fight in New York last July.
That victory cemented her status as one of the greatest boxers of all time, not just in Ireland, but globally.
Fans have long admired her precision, speed, and tactical brilliance in the ring—qualities that earned her the nickname The Bray Bomber.
Reflecting on her upcoming retirement, Taylor said in a recent interview with RTÉ:
“We are still trying to figure the details out, but I do have one more fight this year. It is kind of like my retirement fight. It has been an amazing journey, the whole lot of it, over these last 20 years. That’s what we’re hoping and preparing for, to have one last fight. It is going to be an amazing celebration.”
Taylor has expressed her desire to stage her final fight at Croke Park, the iconic arena synonymous with Irish sports history.
While the date and opponent remain unconfirmed, she hopes to deliver a fitting farewell on home soil, celebrating her journey from a young girl in Bray to a global champion and household name.
“Fighting my last fight in our most iconic arena, how special would that be? I think it would be absolutely remarkable if I was able to do that… Either way, I’ll be ending my career here and I’m very, very excited about that.”
Other venues like the 3Arena or Aviva Stadium in Dublin remain as potential alternatives, but Croke Park holds the top spot in her heart—a fitting stage for The Wicklow Wonder’s final performance.
Katie Taylor’s impact extends far beyond her professional accolades. She has inspired a generation of young athletes, particularly women in boxing, to chase their dreams with determination and courage. Her career is a testament to discipline, resilience, and the explosive energy that made her The Bray Bomber.
As fans anticipate her final bout, it’s clear that Taylor’s legacy is already immortal. From her local gyms in Bray to the global spotlight, she has carried the pride of Ireland and the spirit of a champion wherever she fought.
The summer promises more than a fight—it promises a celebration of the life and career of The Bray Bomber, the unmatched Wicklow Wonder.
