Wicklow County Council unanimously call for emergency funding amid extensive road damage in the wake of Storm Chandra, citing growing safety concerns and disruption across the county
Elected members of Wicklow County Council have called on the Government to provide urgent emergency funding to repair roads damaged by Storm Chandra.
At the council’s plenary meeting this week councillors voiced serious concerns about the condition of roads across the county in the aftermath of the storm.
Members said the deterioration of road surfaces is having a significant impact on residents, business owners and all road users, with safety and accessibility issues raised during lengthy discussions.
A suspension of standing orders was proposed by Cllr Avril Cronin and seconded by Cllr Gerry O’Neill, with support from Cllrs Patsy Glennon, Pat Mahon, Jason Mulhall and Peter Stapleton.
An amendment was proposed by Cllr Joe Behan, seconded by Cllr Patsy Glennon, and ultimately received unanimous backing from all elected members.
The agreed motion calls on the Council to write to the Department of Transport, the Office of the Taoiseach, and Wicklow TDs and Senators seeking additional funding for emergency road repairs resulting from Storm Chandra.
Councillors were told that the estimated cost of repairs in the Baltinglass Municipal District alone stands at €5 million, while the projected cost for the entire county is €15.6 million.
Members are demanding an immediate response from Government and the allocation of the full funding required to restore Wicklow’s road network.
The motion states:
“To write to the Department of Transport, Office of the Taoiseach, Wicklow TD's and Senators to seek additional roads funding for emergency repairs as a result of Storm Chandra. The estimated cost of road repairs for the Baltinglass MD is €5 million, the cost of road repairs for the entire County Wicklow is estimated at €15.6 million. The Council demand the Government respond immediately and provide the funding required for County Wicklow.”
