Wicklow Bucks The National Trend With Rising Car Theft Despite Falling Rates Nationwide

A significant fall in motor theft in the first six months of 2025 nationally is not being mirrored in Co. Wicklow

The public is being urged to remain vigilant despite a notable decrease in motor vehicle theft in the first half of 2025, according to the latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures.

However the trend locally has seen a rise in vehicle theft in the Garden County. In Wicklow, there were 116 thefts, representing a 7% increase compared to 108 incidents in 2024.

A total of 3,472 motor theft and related offences were reported nationally from January to June, marking a 13% drop compared to the same period last year.

Despite the overall decline, motor crime remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, up 42% from 2019 when 2,439 offences were recorded.

Dublin continues to be the main hotspot for vehicle theft, with 1,723 incidents reported in the first six months of 2025. Cork reported 337 thefts, while Limerick saw 215.

Several factors are believed to be driving ongoing motor crime in Ireland:

Some offenders are using platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram to share videos of joyriding, inspiring copycat crimes.

Popularity of Imported Japanese Cars: Vehicles imported from Japan – which saw registrations increase by over 1,000% between 2015 and 2024 – often lack immobilisers and are easier to drive, making them prime targets.

Protecting Your Vehicle

Commenting on the latest figures, OUTsurance Ireland CMO Ian Kennedy said:

Following the record-breaking year in 2024, it’s encouraging to see a significant reduction in motor theft. Simple protective steps can make a big difference, and it seems more people are taking action. Staying consistent with these measures is key to keeping this trend going.”

OUTsurance has shared six practical tips to help motorists safeguard their vehicles:

  • Invest in an Immobiliser: Prevents the engine from starting without the correct key or fob, making theft much harder.
  • Use Wheel Clamps or Steering Locks: Visible deterrents that increase difficulty for opportunistic thieves.
  • Avoid Leaving Your Engine Running Unattended: Idling cars are easy targets for drive-away thefts.
  • Install CCTV or Motion Sensor Lighting at Home: Deters criminals and provides valuable evidence if theft occurs.
  • Use Signal-Blocking Pouches for Keyless Cars: Protects against relay attacks that amplify key fob signals.
  • Keep Keys Out of Sight: Even inside the home, ensure keys are away from letterboxes or visible locations.
