Weekend Cold Snap To Provide Brisk Shake Up To Interminable Rainy Monotony

Temperatures are expected to plummet over the next 24 hours as the country is hit by an arctic blast

Uisce Éireann is urging households to take precautions ahead of the expected cold snap this weekend to protect homes from frozen or burst pipes and prevent potential water supply disruptions.

A sudden drop in temperature can cause pipes to freeze and burst, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall which may have left the ground unstable or caused damage to pipework inside and outside the home.

A low temperature cold weather warning will be in place from 9 pm on Friday night until 10 am on Saturday morning.

There's also a warning for rain in Dublin and Wicklow until midday today. Temperatures are expected to plummet over the next 24 hours as the country is hit by an arctic blast.

Practical Tips for Households

To safeguard your home and water supply during cold weather, Uisce Éireann recommends the following steps:

  • Insulate exposed pipes and tanks in attics, under sinks, and in unheated spaces.
  • Fix dripping taps and small leaks early, as frozen leaks can block pipes.
  • Know the location of your stop valve so you can turn off the water quickly if necessary.
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and pipe entry points to prevent cold draughts.
  • Avoid leaving taps running, as this does not prevent freezing and can worsen problems.

Expert Advice

Margaret Attridge, Head of Water Operations at Uisce Éireann, emphasized the importance of preparation:

We know how upsetting and disruptive burst pipes can be for families and businesses. Taking just a few simple steps now can make all the difference during a cold snap. By insulating pipes, checking for small leaks, and knowing where your stop valve is, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage in your home.”

Reporting Leaks

Uisce Éireann also encourages the public to report any leaks on public roads so that repairs can be carried out promptly.

Leaks can be reported to the customer care team at 1800 278 278 or via the website www.water.ie.
