Parents, guardians and caregivers in Wicklow are advised not to feed implicated batches of the SMA products to infants or young children.
Several baby formula products are being recalled due to the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause food poisoning.
Nestlé has issued a recall of 18 batches of SMA infant and follow-on formula products as a precautionary measure.
Details of the affected batches have been published on the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) website.
Recall notices are also being displayed at points of sale.
The products involved include:
- SMA Advanced First Infant Milk
- SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk
- SMA Comfort
- SMA First Infant Milk
- SMA Gold Prem 2
- SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk
- SMA Alfamino.
Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. It can form in food before consumption and is highly resistant to heat. The FSAI advises eating food contaminated with cereulide can cause nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms typically develop within five hours. Illness usually lasts between six and 24 hours.
