Commitment to N11 expansion in transport plan is a massive boost to Wicklow says Simon Harris who wants upgrade to ease early morning congestion
Plans to upgrade the N11-M11 and extend DART services to Wicklow Town have been confirmed in the Government’s new national transport plan.
The N11-M11 Junction 4 to Junction 14 Improvement Scheme is now designated for construction, part of a multi-billion euro investment in transport infrastructure across the country.
The project aims to ease congestion, improve road safety, and boost travel reliability for commuters. Local representatives had lobbyed to have the project reinstated in the National Development Plan due to its perceived importance for Wicklow's economy and infrastructure.
Tánaiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris welcomed the announcement, highlighting the urgent need for improvements.
He said: “We all know the huge need to upgrade and ease congestion on the N11… It’s vital now that this project is quickly advanced and prioritised for delivery.”
On the N81 and DART+ extension, he added: “I will continue to work with Wicklow County Council to ensure we advance this project as early as possible… The plan removes uncertainty and places the Wicklow schemes into defined commitments.”
Wicklow TD John Brady from Sinn Féin strongly bemoaned a cut in government funding for the N11/M11 upgrades and the very broad impact it had for people across County Wicklow...
''The economic cost of this inaction is staggering. Businesses across Wicklow and the wider region are suffering from delays, increased transport costs, and a reduced ability to attract investment due to poor connectivity. The government’s failure to act is actively damaging Wicklow’s economy and preventing the creation of much-needed local jobs, forcing even more people into long commutes.
Beyond the economic impact, there is a serious environmental cost. Every day, thousands of vehicles sit idling in traffic, pumping unnecessary carbon emissions into the air. The government claims to be committed to reducing emissions and tackling climate change, yet their inaction on this issue is making things worse, not better. Instead of allowing traffic to flow efficiently, they have created a chronic bottleneck that increases pollution and damages air quality for everyone.
It is critical, this essential project moves forward without any further delay. Wicklow cannot wait any longer.''
