Tánaiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris has hailed the official opening of the new Bray DART Interchange, describing it as “a transformational development for Bray and the wider Wicklow area.”
The project which was led by Wicklow County Council and funded by the National Transport Authority, aims to bring together bus, rail, taxi, cycling, and pedestrian links in a single location at Bray Train Station.
Designed by Atkins Réalis Consultancy, the scheme blends upgrades to the public realm with preservation of the station’s historic character.
Among the key features of the interchange include:
- New realigned bus interchange facilities for a more comfortable and safer customer experience, including improved bus parking and taxi spaces.
- Upgraded pedestrian infrastructure, with widened footpaths, safer crossings and improved accessibility for all users.
- Enhanced landscaping, including new seating areas, tree planting, and dedicated cycle parking.
- Reconfigured carriageways and footways, incorporating sustainable drainage systems and underground service upgrades.
- A new taxi rank on Station Road, north of the Daly Station entrance, ensuring convenient connections for commuters and visitors.
Speaking at the opening, Harris said the development would transform how people travel in the town:
“The new DART Interchange will make it easier than ever for people to travel in a sustainable manner, whether they are walking, cycling, taking the bus, or using the DART. This is a project that will transform how people move around the town, reduce congestion, and support local businesses.”
He thanked Wicklow County Council Cathaoirleach Melanie Corrigan, the NTA, and all project partners for their work in bringing the scheme to life.
The multi-phase project involved major underground works and public realm improvements along Quinsborough Road and Strand Road. It is expected to serve as a model for future transport hubs nationwide by encouraging active travel, reducing car dependency, and revitalising the town centre.
