The return of the Rás is expected to deliver a significant tourism and economic boost for Baltinglass and surrounding areas, with large crowds anticipated to line the Wicklow roads.
The Wicklow Mountains will once again take centre stage in Irish cycling. The route for the 2026 Rás Tailteann has been officially unveiled, confirming a major stage finish in Baltinglass.
Ireland’s premier road race will return to Wicklow for the first time in eight years. Stage 4 will run from Carlow Town to Baltinglass on Saturday, May 23rd.
The demanding 14 kilometre stage is expected to play a key role in deciding the overall race, featuring eight categorised climbs, including two iconic Category 1 ascents: the Shay Elliott Memorial and the Wicklow Gap.
Race organisers say the Wicklow Mountains stage is likely to separate the general classification contenders, with the challenging terrain providing one of the toughest tests of the five-day race.
Race director Ger Campbell says Wicklow’s return is a highlight of the 2026 route:
We are particularly excited to be bringing the race back to Wicklow. The Wicklow Mountains have produced unforgettable stages in the past, and we expect Stage 4 into Baltinglass to be one of the decisive days of the race.
He added the 2026 route offers a mix of terrain for sprinters, climbers and attacking riders, while also reconnecting the event with some of its most historic locations.
The 71st edition of Rás Tailteann gets underway in Portlaoise on Wednesday, May 20th covering 785 kilometres over five days, before concluding in Dunboyne, County Meath on Sunday, May 24th.
The return of the Rás is expected to deliver a significant tourism and economic boost for Baltinglass and surrounding areas, with large crowds anticipated to line the Wicklow roads.
