Public Urged to Give Seals Space Along Wicklow Coast

Wicklow Seal

Seals are protected by law. They need space to breed and wean.

Wicklow Municipal District is reminding beachgoers, especially dog owners, to keep their distance from seals spotted along the coastline.

From September to December, grey seals come ashore to breed, rest, moult, and socialise, returning to the same haul-out sites each year. During this time, females give birth to a single pup covered in distinctive white fur. These pups stay on land for several weeks, being weaned. They are highly vulnerable to disturbance.

In recent weeks, several seal pups have been seen along the Wicklow coast, prompting renewed calls for the public to act responsibly. A seal simply becoming aware of human presence, even from a distance, can cause harmful stress.

Keep Your Distance

Visitors are asked to maintain at stay at least 100 metres from seals on land and keep dogs under control at all times.  Approaching seals can cause mothers to abandon their pups, leaving them orphaned and severely reducing their chances of survival.

Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) frequently intervenes to rehabilitate these pups, but experts stress that most would thrive naturally if left undisturbed.

“The best way to help a seal pup is to give it space. Never touch, feed, or attempt to move a seal — and don’t try to return it to the sea.”

Protecting a Valued Species

Seals are legally protected under the Wildlife Act, making it both illegal and dangerous to approach them or to allow pets to do so. Wicklow’s beaches are cherished by locals and visitors alike, and respecting wildlife ensures they remain a safe haven for all.

Wicklow Municipal District is working with Seal Rescue Ireland to help raise awareness. Information signs and restricted access are in place at key haul-out locations, including Brides Head Beach in Wicklow Town.
