Wicklow is seeing a rise in flu cases as a North Wicklow based medic urges residents to get vaccinated, rest if unwell, and take precautions to protect themselves and their community.
As winter takes hold, Wicklow is seeing a significant increase in flu cases, leading to more patients presenting with respiratory symptoms.
Local GPs are urging residents to be sensible if they feel unwell and to take care of themselves at home whenever possible to reduce pressure on hospitals.
Dr. Emma Jane McGovern, Co-founder and GP at North Wicklow Medical in Newtownmountkennedy, explained to East Coast FM: “Of course, we are happy to see patients, but we’re trying to keep people out of hospitals as much as possible.”
The Importance of Flu Vaccines
There has been some confusion regarding flu vaccines for older adults. While the high-strength vaccine designed for those over 65 is not widely available, Dr. McGovern emphasizes that any flu vaccine is beneficial, helping to boost immunity and layer protection year after year.
“It’s not too late to get your flu vaccine,” she advises. ''Children aged 2 to 18 can receive a nasal spray vaccine, which is especially important this year as flu has hit children hard. Adults, particularly those at higher risk—such as older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying medical conditions—are encouraged to get vaccinated.''
Vaccination not only protects the individual but also helps prevent the spread of influenza to family members and vulnerable community members.
Recognizing Flu Symptoms
Flu is more severe than a common cold. Dr. McGovern notes symptoms can include: sudden fever, severe aches and pains, sore throat and cough.
Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea or vomiting
She recommends resting, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed. In some cases, doctors may prescribe additional treatments to help manage symptoms.
GP Access in Wicklow
While vaccination and self-care are key, accessing a GP remains a challenge in some areas. Wicklow has seen recent improvements with new practices opening in Bray, Wicklow Town, Rathnew, and Newtownmountkennedy, but in western parts of the county, including Blessington, continue to experience limited access.
“GPs are available and want to work, but support is needed to allow new GPs to establish practices and for existing practices to expand their services,” explains Dr. McGovern. Recruitment drives have increased GP numbers nationally, but some areas still face shortages.
Key Takeaways for Wicklow Residents
- Get vaccinated—for yourself and to protect vulnerable loved ones.
- Stay home if unwell—rest and hydration are essential.
- Seek medical advice when necessary—but help reduce hospital pressure when possible.
- Be mindful of your community—avoiding the spread of flu helps everyone, especially the elderly and immunocompromised.
With winter in full swing, Wicklow residents are encouraged to take preventive measures seriously and support each other through this busy flu season.
