Darragh O Brien says there may be a need for innovative solutions, which do not include a cull or pilot cull of seals, which are protected under the EU Habitats Directive.

Darragh O Brien says there may be a need for innovative solutions, which do not include a cull or pilot cull of seals, which are protected under the EU Habitats Directive.

There had been concerns the government was considering a pilot scheme following a parliamentary question on the issue in the Dail.

Wicklow County Council has urged the public, and particularly dog owners, to be mindful of disturbing seals when they visit the coast this autumn.

September to December is the breeding season for Grey Seals, during which time the adults seek safe sites to shelter while on land. These are typically beach areas where the animals return year after year to breed, rest and engage in social activity.

Seals are known to abandon their young if they detect human scent on their pup and the council are warning people to keep their dogs on leads and not to approach any seals they see along the coast.
