Greystones/Wicklow Coastguard has issued a warning that “seconds count” when it comes to helping someone in difficulty in the water and the loss of a lifebuoy in an area can be “detrimental”.
It follows the destruction of the lifebuoy at Bray Harbour over the bank holiday weekend, after locals reported that it had been set on fire on Saturday night, August 3, causing a blaze that could be seen by one resident as far away as Bray Head.
Locals expressed their anger and disappointment at the loss of the lifesaving device in an area that is popular with swimmers of all ages in the summer, wondering why anyone would engage in such a wanton and senseless act, and one with potentially disastrous consequences.
