Tánaiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris convened this meeting following sustained pressure on the Department of Transport
The much-anticipated meeting with Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien regarding the proposed closure of Herbert Road in Bray will take place this afternoon.
Tánaiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris convened the meeting after extensive engagement with local residents, campaigners, and community representatives.
The Tánaiste invited all Oireachtas members from Wicklow across political parties to attend the meeting.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Simon Harris said:
“Today is an important day for the people of Bray and the wider Wicklow community. This meeting isn’t about politics. It is about one thing: stopping a deeply flawed, illogical and damaging proposal to close Herbert Road.”
The Wicklow TD continued:
“I made a clear promise to residents that I would fight this closure with everything I have and today is a key step in the right direction. We will be sitting down with the Minister to make the case on behalf of residents in Bray, united as Wicklow representatives, to insist that this plan is scrapped.”
Describing the proposed closure as “stupid” and “unworkable,” the Tánaiste reiterated the long-term consequences the plan would have on traffic flow, local business, emergency access, and quality of life in Bray and surrounding areas.
“This is about common sense. The Herbert Road is a vital artery in our town, and shutting it simply doesn’t stand up to logic. This proposed closure must be stopped.”
The Tánaiste also thanked the local community and councillors for their consistent efforts and activism, highlighting in particular the work of Cllrs Melanie Corrigan and Ned Whelan.
