Katie Taylor has opted to take time away from boxing "to attend to personal matters"
Wicklow woman Katie Taylor has been given WBC ‘Champion in Recess’ status.
The Olympic and multiple World professional boxing champion has confirmed this week that she will take time out from boxing due to personal matters.
The 39-year-old undisputed light-welterweight champion last fought in July, after beating Amanda Serrano in New York.
She was due to defend her title against mandatory challenger, Britain's Chantelle Cameron, but the WBC now has ordered Cameron to face Sandy Ryan for the newly-vacant belt.
As emeritus champion, Taylor will be first in line to challenge the new titleholder should she return.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said the honour recognises her “outstanding career.”
Taylor has yet to confirm if she will fight again, though she previously described a potential bout at Dublin’s Croke Park as the “icing on the cake.”
Her promoter Eddie Hearn believes no decision on her future will be made until 2026.
