Patients in the Dublin/Wicklow region who sustain life threatening bleeding following major trauma, will no longer have to wait until they arrive at the Emergency Department before receiving a transfusion.
For the first time in Ireland, the blood transfusion Lab at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, in partnership with Wicklow Rapid Response is now able to provide emergency blood and plasma directly at the scene of an accident. Hemorrhaging is one of the top causes of death from major trauma. Experts say providing transfusions off site will significantly improve a patient’s chance of survival.
