Announcement of new services to support Wicklow Ambulances is “long overdue” according to Arklow district county councillor
The introduction of new ambulance services for Wicklow is “long overdue” according to a local councillor.
Approval has been enabled by the Governments announcement of €8m in 2025 (part year), rising to €16m in 2026 for new service developments in the National Ambulance Service.
There will be an additional two extra staff as well as extra shifts for ambulance cover in Arklow.
The Tuesday day shift will now have a crew from 7am to 7pm, and 10am to 9pm.
Hopes are high that with an increased fund next year, more services can be added.
Monday and Sunday will also see additional cover, with an ambulance now available from 10am to 9pm to compliment the existing 7am to 7pm service.
Local Arklow district Fianna Fail Councillor Pat Kennedy has been a strong advocate for increasing services in Arklow and beyond.
He had raised the issue at national level to ensure additional ambulance services are delivered for Wicklow.
Expressing his delight at the announcement Cllr Kennedy said,
“I am delighted to be told that Wicklow will finally have ambulance cover. This is an issue I have been so determined to deliver on. Having ambulance cover will help meet the needs of the communities across our county and it is long overdue.
Finally, Cllr Kennedy went on to conclude that the long campaign that he has been a huge part of has been worth it:
“With an increased fund for services doubling next year, I would like to see more services being added, along with extra staff.
“But we are in the now, and I am thrilled that extra cover has been given and increased staff has been allocated. I anticipated this change for a long time, and I’m delighted to have help deliver it for our communities. The services go live from Monday the 1st of September.”
