The current wave of Covid-19 started before the easing of Level 5 restrictions for Christmas according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
The HPSC has defined the starting date of each wave and says this one started on November 22nd, ahead of the economy's reopening on December 1st.
This current third wave has seen more than 120,000 cases identified and over 1,000 deaths linked to Covid-19.
