Wicklow County Council has secured funding of 150,000 euro from the National Transport Authority, to carry out a Transport Study in Arklow.
The study will examine ways to help address traffic congestion in the town.
The council is being urged to prioritise securing funding for the construction of a access roads on and off the M11 to the Vale Road and the development of a new port access road, which would remove a large number of heavy goods vehicles from the town centre.
Currently those travelling to Woodenbridge or Aughrim have to come through Arklow, which adds to the congestion.
Welcoming the funding, Wicklow T.D. John Brady says traffic congestion is still a major problem and needs to be addressed to ensure the town’s potential can be fully unlocked.
