Risks associated with failing to proceed with Bray Harbour scheme have been laid bare
Plans to improve Bray Harbour are facing funding and logistical challenges.
The €9.7m Bray Harbour Improvement Scheme has received €7.3m from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, with the rest from Wicklow County Council.
Proposed upgrades include dredging, better wave protection, improved lighting, pavements, cycle paths, and a new promenade.
Separately it's reported that lack of wave protection can make the harbour unsafe, while deep water restricts deep draft boats from mooring damaging commercial and leisure opportunities.
Other issues identified included structural defects, safety deficiencies, lack of lighting and poor drainage around the harbour, which hamper safe access and the enjoyment of the amenity.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Melanie Corrigan says delays could leave the harbour underused and stall surrounding development:
''It was very disappointing this morning to see that the Bray Harbour Improvement Scheme could be possibly further delayed due to increased funding issues. This scheme is to bring much needed improvements to the harbour area and it's been on the agenda for many years and the scheme will bring improved public realm, it'll increase commercial and leisure activity and safer conditions for boats and will allow for larger vessels to access the harbour and it certainly would be a very disappointing thing to see if it was to be delayed because of the funding issues.''
