Enniskerry Born Daniel Whelan Seals $7m Contract Extension With Green Bay Packers

Wicklow born Dan Whelan has signed a multi-million dollar contract extension with the Green Bay Packers

Enniskerry's Daniel Whelan has signed a contract extension worth $7 million with NFL giants Green Bay Packers.

The Wicklow man has put pen to paper on a three-year deal which will keep him at the famous Lambeau Field until 2028, a historic site underpinned by the success of the iconic coach Vince Lombardi.

The extension totalling $7 million with a guaranteed figure of $2 million elevates the man with the big boot towards the top end of NFL punters in salary terms.

Whelan became the first Irish-born NFL player in a regular season game since 1985 in his debut season in gridiron 2023.

The 26-year-old is preparing for his third year in Wisconsin. He's entered top single year averages for punting yards in Green Bay history in his previous two seasons.

Last season, the Garden county sportsman became the Packers' first punter to average more than 46 yards per punt.

Whelan entered the NFL in 2022 signing for the New Orleans Saints before being cut before final rosters were named

He subsequently spent that season with the DC Defenders in the XFL, where his stellar performances secured a move to Green Bay to make their roster.

He lived in Ireland until the age of 13 before moving to California. Whelan began his punting life at 16 before earning a scholarship to University of California Davis.

He'll feature in the Packers’ regular season opener against Detroit Lions on Sunday.
