Wicklow Councillors have passed a material contravention to allow for the construction of over 300 residential units in Blessington, a new town park and the completion of the northern end of the Blessington inner-relief road.At April’s meeting of Wicklow County Council, the elected members were asked to consider a material contravention report in accordance with section 34 (6) of the Planning and Development Act 2000 in respect of PRR23/689 Cairn Homes Property Limited, lands within the townlands of Blessington Demesne, Newpaddocks and Santryhill, Blessington.

24 councillors were required to vote in favour in order for the material contravention to pass.Cllr Edward Timmins was happy to propose the material contravention as he stated: “There are a number of good reasons to support this. Firstly, it is bringing over 300 houses to Blessington which has a real shortage of houses at this point in time."This scheme also involves affordable houses and social houses. At the moment there's no affordable houses for sale in Blessington and this is the first step towards bringing affordable houses to a really rapidly growing town and a large number of people who are excluded from the housing list because they are above the limit for the threshold for social housing and they can't afford to buy the houses because they are quite expensive in Blessington. It does offer affordable houses, I think approximately 30, which would be a good start for people in Blessington.
