Arklow Municipal District recently completed a project focused on the protection and enhancement of the Abbey Wall and Abbey Lane.
A prior survey in the area revealed significant archaeological findings, including 17th-century pottery and pre-1800 bones.
Following the Department of Heritage's policy, these artefacts have been preserved in their original location.
This laneway, a vital pedestrian link from Castle Park to Main Street and adjacent to the Abbey Cemetery, now serves as a revitalised public space, blending historical preservation with community enhancement.
Arklow Municipal District staff installed the new lighting to the wall and laneway as well as completing the works to the flowerbed.
In a speech, the Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District, Cllr. Pat Kennedy, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I hope you all agree that this is a wonderful space, offering additional public realm opportunities that can serve as a tourist attraction, a venue for entertainment, and a hub for markets. At the same time, it beautifully preserves and maintains our connection to our heritage”.
