People renting out properties for short-term letting could be fined 5,000 euro or jailed for six months from today.
The number of entire homes advertised on Airbnb for short term stays in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford, has increased to 6,900 according to an analysis by the Irish Independent.
In July new rules took effect which aimed to make short-term letting less attractive to home owners, with a view to bringing more properties back into the rental market.
Those short-term letting are -as of last Summer- obliged to register with their local authority. However just 370 applications have been received nationwide to date.
