Social Democrats To Continue Holding Government Formation Talks

The Social Democrats insist they would not enter government simply to make up the numbers.

The parliamentary party met today and decided to continue government formation talks.

Statement from Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan following a meeting of the party’s parliamentary party this morning.

“At a meeting of the Social Democrats parliamentary party this morning, a decision was taken to continue talks with the four parties we have already engaged with – Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and Labour.

“Earlier, during the meeting, I and the other members of our negotiation team – Jennifer Whitmore and Gary Gannon – updated the parliamentary party on those meetings.

“We reported that the meetings had been positive and constructive with a good exchange of views.

“These talks have been exploratory to date but I expect that next week they will become more focused – particularly on the dealbreakers we highlighted during the election campaign.

“Those dealbreakers were the delivery of 50,000 genuinely affordable homes during the lifetime of the next government; the full implementation of Sláintecare; quality public childcare; a senior minister for disability and credible climate action to avoid up to €20 billion in EU fines.

“In continuing these talks, the Social Democrats are delivering on a commitment we gave to the electorate to talk to every party after the election with a view to forming a government and delivering on our mandate.”

In a brief joint statement the parties described a joint meeting as positive and constructive.

The parties will meet over the coming days as they continue to discuss a programme for Government.

However Fine Gael wants a two-and-a-half-year split on the role, similar to the arrangement in the outgoing government.

Conversations are underway on how best to form the next government.

The Social Democrats is set to hold separate meetings with Sinn Fein and Labour later this week about the next steps in forming a government.

Along with meeting with the Soc Dems on Friday, Labour will also meet with the sole Green TD of the next Dail - Roderic O'Gorman.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael look set to reach out to independents - as the two parties combined are just 2 seats off a majority.

However Wicklow-Wexford TD Malcolm Byrne says the door remains open for the likes of Labour and the Soc Dems.

Fianna Fáil's James Browne hopes the boundaries in the new Wicklow-Wexford constituency will be revisited.

North Wexford candidates secured all three seats in Wicklow-Wexford.

Browne - the outgoing junior Justice Minister, who was re-elected in Wexford - believes the introduction of the boundary was not a sensible idea.

The Fianna Fáil Minister missed out on the final spot in Wicklow, with Fine Gael's Edward Timmins getting in instead.

Earlier on, Green Party TD Steven Matthews lost his seat after first being elected to the Dail in 2020.

12 seats are yet to be filled in the next Dáil, with counting complete in 38 of the 43 constituencies so far.

Counts in Louth, Cavan Monaghan, Tipperary North and Kildare North are continuing this morning, while a recount has been requested by a People Before Profit candidate in Cork North Central.

35 votes separate Mick Barry and Labour's Eoghan Kenny.

As it stands, Fianna Fáil are on 43 seats, followed by Fine Gael and Sinn Féin, who both have 36.

The Social Democrats have 11 seats, while Labour have 9.

The Green Party has just one elected TD, following leader Roderic O'Gorman's win in Dublin West yesterday afternoon.

Edward Timmins has filled the fourth and final seat of the Wicklow Count.

The thirteenth and final count for the Wicklow constituency has been revealed.

The Returning Officer Mary Delahanty announced the count at 05:23am on Monday morning after 21 hours of counting in Shoreline Leisure Centre in Greystones.

The final count was a distribution of surplus votes from Shay Cullen (Independent) of 6,460 votes.

The quota remained as 11,415 votes.

The Non Transferable votes equals to 3,771.

Stephen Donnelly (Fianna Fail), 1,776 final count votes, 7,547 total polls.
Edward Timmons (Fine Gael), 1,559 final count votes, 9,110 total polls.

There was one vacancy left to be filled but neither candidates succeeded in exceeding the quota of 11,415.

Therefore the candidate with the highest votes was elected.

All 4 seats in the Wicklow constituency have been filled.

Wicklow Twelfth Count Announced.

Now elected John Brady's (Sinn Fein) surplus votes have been distributed amongst the other candidates.

Stephen Donnelly (Fianna Fail), 157 votes, 6471 votes in total.

Edward Timmins (Fine Gael ), 68 votes, 7551 votes in total.

John Brady succeeded with 11,945 votes and 530 surplus votes. John Brady has been TD for Wicklow since the 2016 election and has succeeded in re-election in 2024.

The quota remains as 11,415.

The eleventh count had 1,158 Non Transferable Votes.

Mayo is shaping into a showdown between Independent Patsy O'Brien and Aontu's Paul Lawless.

Aontu is also within a shot for a seat in Dublin West in a fight with Green leader Roderic O'Gorman.

So far more than 40 TDs have been elected.

But we're able to make a projection based on first counts across the country.

Our figures suggest just 20 of the 174 seats are still very genuinely undecided.

On the numbers Fianna Fáil will have at least 45 seats, Fine Gael 37 and Sinn Féin 38 - with all being in play for a few more.

There will be at least 7 for the Social Democrats and another 7 for Labour.

Four for Independent Ireland, 13 Independents, 2 PBP and one seat for Aontu.

20 odd seats across the country are too close to call but we now have a broad sense of what the next Dáil will look like.

Taoiseach Simon Harris has been the first candidate to be elected in the Wicklow constituency. He topped the poll with 16,869 first preference votes and surpassed the quota of 11,415.

First Seats Filled In 34th Dail

Sinn Féin's Eoin O'Broin and Paul Donnelly, Fianna Fáil's Jack Chambers and Independent Verona Murphy have all been elected in the last few minutes.

We've seen David Cullinane elected on the first count in Waterford.

Jennifer Carroll MacNeill was the first candidate over the line while her Ministerial colleague Patrick O'Donovan quickly followed.

In Dublin Central Gerry Hutch has finished 4th and will have to face a transfer battle with Labour's Marie Sherlock if he wants to stay in the race.4

Fianna Fail Leader Micheál Martin has retained his seat in Cork.

The Greens aren't quite conceding total defeat but Roderic O'Gorman is the only one in the hunt for a seat.

It also looks as though the exit poll understated Fianna Fáil support and overstated Sinn Féin.

However at this stage it's still too hard to call between the three largest parties.

First Count Expected In 4 Seat Wicklow Constituency

A first count here at Shoreline in Greystones is not expected until later this evening.

With all 158 boxes now open, Taoiseach Simon Harris is leading the way in the Wicklow Constituency with tallies suggesting the Fine Gael Leader holds over 30 per cent of the vote.

Sinn Fein Deputy John Brady is in second place with just under 15% followed closely by Jenifer Whitmore of the Social Democrats, on 13.5%.

Speaking to East Coast FM this afternoon Deputy Whitmore said they have very clear red lines on any potential coalition talks.

However Deputy Brady said he's remaining cautiously optimistic about his party's prospects.

Outgoing Health Minister Stephen Donnelly is in real danger of losing his seat alongside Steven Mathews of the Green Party.

The tallies would suggest sitting Cllrs Edward Timmins and Joe Behan alongside Independent Candidate Shay Cullen are all polling well.
